Ask an American soccer fan which jersey they'd rather not pull out of a mystery box, and one club comes up more than any other. It isn't Manchester United. It's Real Madrid.

When fans order a mystery soccer jersey from us, they can name the clubs and countries they'd rather not receive. Across 14,388 orders in the past year, Real Madrid was named as a shirt to avoid more often than any club in the world — clear of the Premier League giants, and clear of its own biggest rival.

Every “most hated soccer club” list you've seen is opinion — a poll, a Reddit thread, or a chatbot's best guess. This one is different. It's behavior, not attitude: real fans, paying real money, telling us which jerseys to keep out of the box. It's the first ranking of its kind built on what American soccer fans actually do, not what they say.

What we found

• Real Madrid is the most-avoided soccer jersey in America, named in 1,444 requests — about 36% more often than any other club.
• It's a two-country story at the top. Real Madrid and Barcelona both land in the top six. The Clásico rivalry that splits American soccer fandom shows up clearly in the data.
• Inter Miami is the most-avoided MLS club (164) — the clearest sign of the “Messi effect” cutting both ways: the team everyone watches is also the one plenty of rivals don't want to wear.
• Avoiding a rival is the norm. More than 3 in 4 orders (77%) named at least one club or country to keep out of the box.

Why Real Madrid tops the list in America

Two forces put Real Madrid at number one. The first is simple: they win, constantly, and winning breeds rivals. The most-avoided shirts are, almost to the club, the most successful teams in the world — Real Madrid, the Manchester clubs, Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona. A jersey is a statement of identity, and no one wants to open a box and find the colors of the team they define themselves against.

The second force is specific to the U.S. American soccer fandom is heavily shaped by La Liga and by a huge, passionate Hispanic fanbase — and that audience is split hard down the middle between Real Madrid and Barcelona. In the raw order notes, the single most common instruction we see is some version of “I'm a Barça fan, please no Real Madrid.” In Britain, Real Madrid barely cracks the top ten. In America, it runs away with the top spot. That gap is the story.

The Clásico shows up in the box

Real Madrid at #1 and Barcelona at #6 isn't a coincidence — it's El Clásico playing out one order at a time. American Madridistas ask us to keep Barcelona out; Culés ask us to keep Real Madrid out. It's the closest thing U.S. soccer has to a built-in, coast-to-coast rivalry, and it drives more avoid-requests than any domestic matchup. British fans have the Old Firm and the Manchester derby; American fans have the Clásico, and the data proves it.

Inter Miami and the MLS effect

The most-avoided American club is Inter Miami — and that's a compliment disguised as a snub. Since Lionel Messi arrived, Inter Miami became the team every casual fan watches, which also makes it the team plenty of MLS die-hards can't stand to wear. Fans of the other coasts — LA Galaxy, LAFC, Seattle, Atlanta — show up in the notes asking specifically to avoid Miami. It's proof that MLS now has real tribal rivalries, not just expansion-era politeness.

The flip side: what American fans actually want

Rejection is only half the story. The same orders tell us which jerseys U.S. fans are actively hoping to unwrap — and it leans toward national teams, classic retro kits, and Liga MX sides rather than the biggest European clubs. How the mystery works

None of this data would exist without the format. Every mystery soccer jersey we send is a surprise — but you stay in control of the things that matter. Name the nations or leagues you want to avoid, and tell us the specific clubs you'd rather not receive. So a Barça fan never opens a Real Madrid shirt, and an LA fan never opens Inter Miami. That's how a box can be a genuine surprise and still land right.

Methodology

This analysis is based on 14,388 orders placed on mysteryshirtinabox.us between July 2025 and July 2026. Of those, 77% included at least one club, nation, or league the customer asked us to avoid. Club-level figures were taken from the free-text “teams to avoid” field completed at checkout and grouped to canonical club names (for example, “Man U,” “MUFC,” and “United” all count as Manchester United). Figures reflect the number of separate requests naming each club, not the number of jerseys sold. National-team and country-level preferences were recorded separately and are not included in this club ranking. Data is aggregated and anonymized.
